A rare and very finely decorated Chinese porcelain vase depicting a flowering peony shrub painted with fencai/famille rose enamels. On the base is the iron red four character mark "Shen de tang zhi" -the "Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue" which was located in the Old Summer Palace, the Yuanmingyuan, which was destroyed by European troops in 1860. The mark was used during the Kangxi and Daoguang reigns and also during the Republic period (1912-1948) when we believe this vase was made.
